Local Resident Gives Work at Home New Meaning
By: Jim Taylor
InnerSpaces Owner Ken Benedict of Watertown figured he could offer his customers lower prices and better services by ridding himself of the Cheshire office and running it out of his Watertown home. He made the move earlier this year.
The interior design and remodeling business, specializing in designing and installing custom cabinetry, has been in business since 1968, and Ken Benedict became vice-president of the firm in 1985, bringing with him nearly 15 years of expertise, designing and installing custom cabinetry. During the next 20 years under his direction, Cheshire Cabinet continued to grow and expand its operations to include designs for all areas of the home. As part of this natural progression, the name Innerspaces was added to reflect the changes in the design services being offered.
The market has continued to change and in January of 2007, Cheshire Cabinet, Inc., ceased operations and closed its physical location in Cheshire. A new company, InnerSpaces Design, LLC, was spawned with a 21st century style of operation as a shop at home and internet-based company. The new company was created to make it easier for customers to select a design and materials at home and on line.
Now you can work with the designer at home and make your selections when it's convenient for you and your family.I can now offer all our services but with more convenience.
Mr. Benedict pointed out that it was difficult to meet with customers with a showroom that was open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. With the website, he makes appointments and is available to the customer when they need him.
InnerSpaces Design does replacements, redesigns and remodels, etc., for "any room in the house," such as media rooms, bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens.
"We do everything," said Ken Benedict, who pointed out that his company handles everything for the customer, including hiring any necessary contractors to do the work. "We offer complete project management for the client."
According to Mr. Benedict, when working with a customer he visits the place to be remodeled, bringing samples, and sits down with the customer to "gather as much information as possible." He then works with the customer to come up with a design and gives a preliminary estimate.
"I like it when people show me cut-outs from magazines or pictures, so I can see exactly what they like, which guides me in formulating their design.
Mr Benedict then comes up with a design layout, and works with the customer through a review of plans to refine it into exactly what the customer wants. Once the final plan is approved, he orders everything. When the products are delivered, his company hires the contractors, and the work is completed under Mr Benedict's supervision.
"I enjoy the creativity, working with my hands, and coming up with concepts and designs," Ken said. "I enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done and seeing people enjoy it."
InnerSpaces Design is the only company in the state carrying two different custom cabinet lines - the first in Imperia Kitchens and the second is Custom Wood Products of Virginia.
Mr. Benedict was raised in Stratford, and attended Stratford schools. He attended Notre Dame Business Management school, NKBA Deign, General Electric Lighting School and Wood Mode Advanced Design School.
Mr Benedict started his own remodeling business in 1975 In Stratford, Ct. before moving to Watertown with his wife Kathie in 1979. Mr Benedict is also a veteran that served in the US Navy during the Viet Nam conflict on PBR River Patrol after graduating from High School in 1965.
